What exactly is a knowledge center?

Here you will experience and learn by experimenting yourself, whether you are a child or an adult.

A science center is defined as a popular science experience and learning center in mathematics, science and technology - where visitors learn by experimenting themselves.

Children and adults will be able to explore phenomena related to nature, the environment, health and technology through their own activities - and in collaboration with others.

More science centers in Norway

Today there are 10 science centers around the country. ViteMeir will be a new science center when it is ready. The centers have much the same content, but are also focused on different themes. For example, VilVite in Bergen focuses more on the fishing and oil industries, while the Oslo science center (Teknisk Museum) focuses more on technology.

For ViteMeir, "sustainable development" is the overarching profile. The environmental dimension is very important and is defined in five professional focus areas, abbreviated REINT.

This stands for resources, energy, brainstorming, nature and technology. Together, the disciplines will complement each other and open up for new ideas. ViteMeir wants to be an arena for brainstorming in addition to knowledge sharing.

Meant for everyone, including tourists

We want to have a lot of activity in the center every day. Then the use is aimed at different target groups and utilized at its best.

During the day, the idea is that kindergartens, schools, educational institutions and businesses will be able to use the center. In the evenings and at weekends, it will be open to everyone - including visitors and tourists.

Renewing itself all the time

A science center is made up of different installations, but with different themes. Some installations will be permanent, while others will be replaced and changed along the way. This may be based on the time of year, topicality and focus in the local area, or similar.

The plan is for ViteMeir to make use of the local area at Kaupanger and have installations outside as well. In this way, local forces will be involved and visitors will become familiar with our region.

The center aims to create synergies between research and education, public agencies and the private sector. This can create an arena for brainstorming between young people and various stakeholders.

ViteMeir is scheduled to be ready for the start of 2020.
