About ViteMeir - The Science Center in Sogn og Fjordane AS

ViteMeir is the science center for Sogn og Fjordane. Right in the heart of Kaupanger in Sogndal municipality you will find a modern and interactive science center that inspires children, youth and adults to explore science, technology, natural sciences and sustainability in an engaging way. Since opening in November 2021, ViteMeir has become an important meeting place for learning, curiosity and experiences in the region. We welcome school classes, kindergartens, families, leisure visitors, businesses and tourists throughout the year, and want to make knowledge both accessible and fun for all age groups. From our opening until today, we have reached an average of over 35,000 visitors each year (average from 2022-2025), with a goal of increasing this number further.

ViteMeir is a non-profit organization. Any surplus from ticket sales, events and projects goes back to our social mission, which is to inspire a passion for science and contribute to recruitment to areas of expertise that Norway needs today and in the future.

What is a science center?

A science center is a popular science experience and learning center. Imagine a mix of a technical museum, a show, a laboratory and an exciting playground. Then you have a small impression of what we are.

Why science center?

The Science Center inspires children and adults to explore and seek new experiences, and collaborates with the Norwegian Education Agency to develop new knowledge that society and business need in the future.

We currently have 13 regional science centers in Norway. ViteMeir Kaupanger is the center for the Sogn og Fjordane region. If you're wondering where all the others are, you can find out here.

A science center for the future

Through interactive exhibitions, experiments, activities and learning programs, we want to strengthen interest in technology, science, mathematics and innovation – skills that society needs both today and in the future.

A visit to us is not (just) about seeing – it is about trying, exploring, creating and experiencing for yourself. We believe that the best learning happens when you get to use both your head and your hands. That is why the experiences at ViteMeir built around interactive and playful learning.

Interactive experiences for children and adults

Our exhibitions are designed to engage both young and old. Across three floors you can explore themes such as energy, the body, mathematics, weather, space and much more. From the bottom of the Sognefjord to the top of Galdhøpiggen, we take you on an experiential journey through nature, science and human development.

Sustainability in the city center

Sustainability is a central part of the identity of ViteMeir . From the idea stage, the center has focused on the environment, resource use and future-oriented solutions. The building is built of 90 percent wood and several local companies were used in the construction process. Read more about the building, which is an entire forest, in this fine article on the Vestland County Council pages.

A learning arena for schools and businesses

ViteMeir We work closely with schools, educational institutions and businesses in the region. We develop teaching programs that are relevant to the curricula and give students practical experience in science and technology.

Through collaboration with local actors and companies, we want to strengthen interest in future-oriented fields and contribute to recruitment within professions with a background in science and technology.

Shop and cafe

Our shop and café are open during the Science Centre's opening hours. In the shop you can find many exciting products that inspire playful learning. Our café, SmakeMeir , offers delicious lunch dishes, cakes, coffee and ice cream, among other things.
