Berekraft on ViteMeir

Here are some of the things we do to contribute to a sustainable society.

Berekraft has been a part of ViteMeir since the idea stage. Below you can read more about our work with Berekraft.

The building: ViteMeir was ready for occupancy in November 2021. The building that houses ViteMeir is owned by Vestland Fylkeskommune and I share the area with Sogndal Vgs. The building consists of 90% wood, and the concrete used has lower CO2 emissions than conventional concrete. Virtually all the waste from the construction process was sorted. You can read more in this nice article on Vestland Fylkeskommune's website, here.

Climate Partners: We are working together with Klimapartnere Vestland to cut all emissions before 2030.

Eco-Lighthouse: ViteMeir is Eco-Lighthouse certified.

SmakeMeir: We are constantly trying to reduce food waste and have a goal of zero food waste from the house. We use a lot of locally sourced ingredients, such as what we harvest from our roof garden.

Learning program: In the Fruit and Berry Academy, students learn how to make the best possible use of our resources. They collect fruit and berries that would otherwise be thrown away and bring them to us to make juice, jam and other products. In the learning program Future food: insects, students learn about alternative protein sources and how we can use them. Here we compare resource use and nutritional content, and our goal is for students to become more aware of what they eat and how access to food resources can change our eating habits.

The SIMAS days are a collaboration between the waste management company SIMAS and ViteMeir. On these days, all 4th graders in the area are invited to a school day at ViteMeir where they learn about recycling, how wood can be a resource and the redesign of clothing. At the SIMAS recycling facility, they are given a guided tour where they see how our waste is handled and how important it is that we sort our waste to be able to use it as a resource.

The roof garden: Our roof garden only contains useful plants and many of these are used in SmakeMeir. If you want to read more about the roof garden, click here.

Sygnir Reodorklubb: Sygnir Reodorklubb is an after-school program for children in grades 5-10. In Sygnir Reodorklubb, the fight against exclusion is one of the basic ideas behind the program. Participants are introduced to new ways of using technology, carry out a project from idea to finished product and, not least, learn how to repair things.

Lost and found on ViteMeir: It's easy to forget things when you're having fun! We understand that people who forget things don't necessarily know where they left them. That's why we regularly go through what has been left behind and contact the owners of garments that are marked with a phone number. We do this because we believe that there is a greater chance that it will be retrieved and thus reduce consumption. Garments etc. that are not marked or not collected are delivered for reuse/recycling a couple of times a year.
