ViteMeir to create a summer school for the parishioners

Ice cream made from liquid nitrogen, soda making with chemistry, and bottle rockets were some of the things on the students' agenda.

- We were never bored, and we could do almost anything we wanted. For example, we could shoot rockets during recess

- I really liked making ice cream, and when I 'lit our hands on fire'.

Some students responded to the student survey after summer school with ViteMeir.

There was actually no plan to have a summer school until 2022, but then they received a preliminary request from Luster municipality.

- Communication manager Åse was skeptical about whether we would be able to do it at short notice and so little time for opening, but I thought we should take this challenge in stride," says ViteVero's Veronika.

After they said yes to a municipality, the rumors spread.

- Since the summer is over, I have held courses in Balestrand, Aurland, Årdalstangen, Øvre Årdal and Flåm, and at Kaupanger, Leikanger, Hafslo and Farnes.

Everyone learned programming

Each course lasted 2-3 days and was free for students to attend, including many experiments.

- Some of the most popular were making soda using chemistry, making ice cream from liquid nitrogen, and launching bottle rockets. Several of the students also thought it was really cool to be allowed to light gas-filled soap bubbles in their hands," says ViteVero.

Common to all the courses has been that they have learned to program, which is important in connection with the new academic renewal in several subjects.

- The youngest pupils have learned to program small robots called bluebots. From 5th grade and upwards, some have engaged in creative programming and designed patterns that they have then printed on textiles, or worked with small computer cards called micro:bit so that they can, among other things, chat with each other and control their football-playing robots," says e-Skill's Eskil Nore Kveim.

More people in summer jobs

SommarViten also made it possible for us to employ more people in summer jobs.

- "Here, the youngest summer job was Anton Tveito, who is a student at a secondary school, and the oldest was Håvard Takle Sanden, who works as a science teacher and wanted extra inspiration," says Veronika.

The summer school was the first encounter with the communication part of the job for operations technician Andreas, and Ingrid as head of food and beverages.

- So it was good that it did?

- The summer school was a real success. It was also a great way for the facilitators to test our learning programs in practice, so now I'm glad we threw ourselves into it," says facilitator Åse Neraas.

In the survey, there were also students who said it should last longer and that they would come back next summer.
