ViteMeir get involved in creating summer schools for the parishes
Liquid nitrogen ice cream, making soda with chemistry, and bottle rockets were some of the things on the students' agenda.
– We were never bored, and we could do almost anything we wanted. For example, we could shoot rockets during recess.
– I really enjoyed making ice cream, and then we 'lit up' our hands.
There were some students who responded to the student survey after the summer school with ViteMeir .
There was actually no plan to have a summer school until 2022, but then they received an inquiry from Luster municipality.
– Communications manager Åse was skeptical about whether we could do it on short notice and with such a short time to open, but I thought we should take on this challenge head on, says ViteVero, Veronika.
After they agreed to a municipality, rumors spread.
– Since the summer is over, we have had courses in Balestrand, Aurland, Årdalstangen, Øvre Årdal, and Flåm, and in Kaupanger, Leikanger, Hafslo, and Farnes.
Everyone learned programming
Each course lasted 2-3 days and was free for students to attend. Among other things, many experiments were conducted.
– Some of the most popular were making soda using chemistry, ice cream from liquid nitrogen, and launching bottle rockets. Several of the students also thought it was really cool to be allowed to light gas-filled soap bubbles in their hands, says ViteVero.
What all the courses have in common is that they have learned to program, which is important in connection with new subject innovations in several subjects.
– The youngest students have learned to program small robots called bluebots. From the 5th grade and up, some have been engaged in creative programming and designed patterns that they have subsequently printed on textiles, or worked with small computer cards called micro:bit so that they can, among other things, chat with each other and control their soccer-playing robots, says e-Skill, Eskil Nore Kveim .
Several in summer jobs
SommarViten also made it possible for us to employees more people in summer jobs.
– The youngest summer job here was Anton Tveito, who is a high school student, and the oldest was Håvard Takle Sanden, who works as a science teacher during the day and wanted extra inspiration, says Veronika.
The summer school was also the first encounter with the communication part of the job for operations technician Andreas, and Ingrid as head of food and beverage.
– So it was good that it did?
– The summer school was a real success. It was also a great way for the facilitators to test out our learning methods in practice, so now I'm glad we got involved, says facilitator Åse Neraas .
In the survey, there were also students who said it should last longer and that they would come back next summer.
