Removing exhibition after near miss
On Sunday, January 30, we received a report that parts of our exhibition, the Berekraft lantern, which hangs in the staircase area by the exhibition area, fell down in an area where children were present.
ViteMeir have spent yesterday and today investigating the cause of the fall and have concluded that it was a mechanical failure in the winch mechanism. Furthermore, conversations have been held with all parents who we know had children at, and in the vicinity of, the fall site. No injuries have been reported, but a number of children were on and very close to the fall site.
ViteMeir is aware of the safety responsibility we have for our guests, and recognizes that this could have had a different outcome. A decision was therefore made to dismantle and remove the lantern from the exhibition area until further notice. This was done today in consultation with the suppliers and installers involved.
In light of yesterday's incident, we have decided to order a risk assessment of all our exhibitions. It should be safe and educational to visit ViteMeir.
